Satellite Data-based Forest Mapping: CopPhil Hosts Practical Training in the Philippines

On 29 May and 19 June 2025, we hosted a series of practical training sessions dedicated to our Earth Observation-based pilot service on forest mapping. The service will support Filipino authorities with more comprehensive insights on the state of forest cover over time, supporting evidence-based decision-making related to urban expansion, agriculture, logging, and deforestation activities.

Gathering at the Philippine Space Agency’s premises in Manila, the course brought together over 30 participants from Filipino institutions to explore from a technical perspective the forest area and type, tree cover density, and forest cover change products provided within the forest service. Participants learned firsthand how the products function and how they can be leveraged in their daily work. The participants then reviewed the results of the exercise with the course organisers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various applications of the products.

This training course was the second of a three-part series on forest mapping, which focuses on foundational concepts, techniques, and applications of Copernicus data for these purposes. In addition to this series, CopPhil is also hosting training courses on its Ground Motion Monitoring, Coastal Marine (Benthic) Habitat Monitoring, Land Cover Mapping, and Crop Mapping pilot services.

As a unique initiative of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, CopPhil, through its EO-based pilot services development and capacity building activities, is supporting the Philippines in addressing climate vulnerability and biodiversity conservation while improving hazard management and resilience.
